Crossrail Holds Exhibition To Showcase Archaeological Finds

Crossrail has begun exibition of a selection of recent finds during the tunnelling programme which has resulted in an exceptional year of discoveries of life in Britain’s past.

In an official statement on their website, Crossrail said, the finds represent the largest archaeology programme in Britain, over the past year during which several ancients relics were uncovered burried deep underground.

The finds included human skulls and skeletons, dating several thousands of years. There were also gold coins as well several personal and household items.

Crossrail said a selection of the new finds "go on display at the Crossrail Visitor Information Centre at Tottenham Court Road between 15 February - 15 March 2014."

Crossrail's team of archaeologists are running the month-long exhibition, where visitors will be able to see some of the recent finds from across the project during the aptly titled "Portals to the Past" exhibition.

In the statement, Crossrails said "we will be displaying more than 50 archaeological finds for the first time, including skulls from Roman London, a Roman cremation pot (which contained remains when discovered), flint used by Londoners 9,000 years ago and items found in a suspected Black Death Plague burial ground are just some of the finds that will be on display."

There will also be lectures to be provided by Crossrail's archaelogists. Both events will rund within the same period of one month.

The opening times for the exhibition, will be held at Crossrail's Visitor Information Centre, behind Centre Point, 6-18 St Giles High Street, WC2H 8LN, are as follow:

* Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 7pm;

* Wednesdays from 11am to 5.30pm; and

* Saturdays from 10am to 5pm.

* Fees: FREE OF CHARGE

The exhibition will be run from 15 February to 15 March, 2014

In addition to the exhibition, Crossrail’s archaeologists will also be running a series of Portals to the Past lectures each Wednesday evening discussing the following:

* The Urban Realm - Buildings Archaeology by Julian Munby from Oxford Archaeology, 19 February;

* Crisis and The Black Death by Sam Pfizenmaier from MOLA, 26 February;

* Beyond the City Walls - Recent finds from Liverpool Street Station by Alison Telfer from MOLA, 5 March;

* London's Last Great Shipbuilder - The Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company by Danny Harrison, MOLA, 12 March.

* Time: Lectures start at 6pm.

* Booking: No booking is required to attend the lectures but we are limited to a maximum 50 people due to safety regulations. We recommend arriving early so as not to be disappointed.
