General Gordon Square, Woolwich, has been name as 'Best Town Centre Project' in the capital.
The major redevelopment project transformed the old Woolwich Square into an iconic, multi-access paved columns, cut through by a central diagonal artery, that leads from Woolwich New Road, on the north to the junction of Wellington street and Thomas Street, on the south.
It has become a favourite place for public functions, attracting hundreds into the town centre. It is also a favourite ground for local scateboarders who perform awesome skills through flips and aerial displays.
Breaking news of the Award, an official statement from the Royal Borough of Greenwich said the award, part of a London-wide award ceremony, recognizes the best schemes that have made a difference to the capital as a whole.
The Award took place on Wednesday February 5 at the London Planning Awards.
The statement said the judges chose the scheme for 'its subtle, yet transformative changes to the way Woolwich Town Centre works, including the provision of a large supermarket, 960 residential units and new Civic Offices'.
Greenwich Council said the project was a major revamp of General Gordon Square into "an attractive place for both the local community and visitors to Woolwich."
As can be seen, the square houses a BBC big screen, which shows major sporting and cultural events as well as community information. The project has also seen the reworking of Beresford Square which houses the vibrant Woolwich Market, the statement said.
Explaining further, the statement said the redevelopment of the Woolwich Squares was part of an ambitious programme of regeneration in Woolwich, which has undergone a rapid transformation in recent years.
"The town centre has also seen new landmark buildings including the Woolwich Central site and the new Woolwich Centre, which houses a new library and new Royal Borough service centre." it added.
Reacting to the Award, Councillor Chris Roberts, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: "Woolwich has changed greatly over the last 2-3 years and these new public spaces and buildings are a clear sign of how the town is growing and regenerating.
"General Gordon Square in particular is now a wonderful space for the community and we've enjoyed seeing people from all over the borough and visitors enjoying events in the square and children especially enjoying the new water feature.
"Woolwich has also greatly benefitted from a better road layout for buses coming through the town centre and I am sure anyone who comes to the town can see the benefits of the recent changes. These are exciting times for the area, not least with the new Crossrail station due to open in four years.
It's brilliant to see our long-held vision for Woolwich becoming a reality. We have driven forward these changes to attract investment into the area which will create new jobs and new opportunities for our residents," he said.
