BOKO HARAM: Nigeria Military Intensify Battle To Stop Terror Group

Faced with an embarrassing dent on Nigeria's image due to the activities of the terror group Boko Haram, Nigeria's military has announced an intensified battle to stop their operations in the country's northeast.

The confirmation was released by Reuben Abati, Spokesman to the office President Goodluck Jonathan after Nigeria's military briefed the media on the response to the recent wave of attackes which left hundreds dead and displaced thousands.

According to the press release, Nigeria's Defence Headquarters announced the intensified campaign to stop insurgent attacks in the north eastern part of the country.

The Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade, told media representatives that the army increased patrols and the mobility of soldiers in the region, adding “The specialized campaign which has commenced is being undertaken simultaneously in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa States.”

Major General Chris Olukolade said they are aware that members of the terrorist group want to escape capture and the army wants to ensure they do not.

The army said Boko Haram attacked some parts of Adamawa state on Wednesday night, in desperation for money and food, looting and burning banks, shops and filling stations along their way through Michika, towards Nigeria's border with Cameroon.

He said “Six of their fighters were killed, two captured while nine of their vehicles were destroyed; one soldier and three civilians also died in the encounter," adding “it is believed that those involved in this latest attacks are the elements that perpetrated the mayhem against students of Federal Government College, Buni-Yadi, Yobe State and other places.”

“The fact remains that the chilly episodes are simply typical of terrorist’s intention to intimidate the people into subscribing to their false claim to invincibility,” General Olukolade told the media.

He denied allegations that soldiers were withdrawn at checking points close to targeted communities, saying "troops deployed in counter insurgency operations are always on mobile patrol and not static."
