Crimea Parliamnt Declares Independence, Urges Global Recognition

by Benson Agoha

Crimean law makers today have urged the United Nations and other nations to recognize it as an independent country from Ukraine.

Against expectation, Crimea has today declared the region independent from Ukraine, following the `Yes' vote secured in Sunday's referendum.

Crimea was being widely expected to apply on Monday to join rejoin Russia if the referendum approves with a `yes' vote.

It comes as Crimeans celebrated with fireworks after a 95.7% positive result.

Monday's declaration of independence is an added twist to the politics surrounding the removal of former pro-Russian Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych.

Britian and America rejected the referendum, even before it was held, calling it illegal.

But latest news from Crimea nothwithstanding, EU Commissioner for Justice, Citizenship and Fundamental Rights, Vivian Redding said the European Union stands with Ukraine and Crimea.

Sharing her view on Twitter the EU chief tweeted "We stand with #Ukraine. #Crimea", as she acknowledged a post from a Ukrainian natonal.

"In the same resolution, it said that all Ukrainian state property on the territory of the Black Sea peninsula will be nationalized and become the property of the Crimean Republic," ToI reported.
A delegation of Crimean lawmakers is set to travel to Moscow Monday for negotiations on how to proceed further as media reports say it is a matter of time before it is annexed by Russia.

But Britain and USA are set to impose sanctions on Russia if they maintain their earlier positions.
