Ukraine Crisis: Fireworks In Crimea As Referendum Gets 95.7% Approval

by Benson Agoha

It was fireworks and celebrations as happy and overjoyed Crimeans passed an overwheeming 'YES' vote, in a referedum rejected by Britain and the United States as unacceptable.

In a remarkable show of solidarity with Russia, 95.7% of Crimeans voted to rejoin "their family", and celebrated with Russian flags and showing happy faces.

The report by Russia's RT Newsper said 79% of the population took part in the voting.

~The referendum itself was said to have been organised professionally and that Sinferopol, capital of Crimea became a centre of celebration following the `peaceful and democratic' event.

In a swift reaction, government confirm their earlier position that Britian will not accept the referendum as the west consider it illegal.

A message from the Prime Ministers office shared on Twitter said "We don’t recognise Crimea referendum or outcome. We call on Russia to enter dialogue with Ukraine & resolve crisis within international law."

Maintaining earlier positions, reports say US secretary of State, John has also already called Russian President, Vladmir Putin and told him that the United States will never accept the result of the referendum.

A total of 135 obervers and from 23 different countries who said it was done according to international law.

Some of the oberservers say it was a historical democratic choice and that not major deviations from international law.

Russian forces reportedly crossed over into Ukraine over the weekend for the first time, briefly occupying a small town before retreating to guard a gas plant.

Reports say, with the events in Ukraine leading to the sudden removal of it's elected pro-Russian President, Viktor Yanukovych, Russia may seize the opportunity to take back a larger chunk of the Ukrainian population, if Yanukovych is not restored.

Crisis that led to riots erupted in Ukraine in November after President Viktor Yanukovych moved to align his country closer to Russia than joining the European Union.

Pro-Russian Ukrainians have justified Russia's claim and moves, arguing that Russia made unconditional grants to Ukraine, where as the EU ties its grants to conditions that must be met.

With over, Crimea is said to be planning to formerly apply to rejoin Russia as early as today. The world waits to see what happens thereafter.
