Energy Use: Watch Your Energy Use During Switch It Off Week

by Benson Agoha

Today marks the beginning of Switch It Off Week which takes place between March 3rd to 9th, 2014.

Energy users are advised to watch their energy use by making extra effort to turn off their appliances, especially when they are not in or when they are not in use.

According to an official release, The Royal Borough of Greenwich is "encouraging people to make an extra effort to turn off all unnecessary appliances to mark Switch if Off Week."

The council statement said this also coincides with with the national Climate Week campaign.

* Switch It Off Week: March 3rd to 9th, 2014.

The aim is to get people thinking and talking about the energy that they use and waste, whether at work, school or at home.
Small changes to how we use our appliances can make a real difference to the amount of energy used. These include not leaving computers and TVs on standby, unplugging chargers that are not in use and switching off unnecessary lights in rooms that aren't being used, the statement said.

Linking both campaigns, the statement said "making the effort to reduce energy use will save you money while also helping to combat climate change" and to reduce the Carbon Trust's estimates that, across the UK, around 8 per cent of annual electricity bill are wasted simply leaving appliances on standby.

Royal Borough Council staff are not left out as they are also being "encouraged to make a special effort during the week" to turn off unwanted lights, PC monitors and electrical appliances left on standby.

And there will be planned energy audits to review the impact of this activity, RGB said.
