Sainbury's, the title sponsor of the first Sport Relief Games to be held at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, is urging Thousands to use the opportunity to get active.
The event will be held in March 2014, and will see thousands of budding runners, swimmers and cyclists completing their Sport Relief challenges in some of the world-class facilities at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford.
In a news release on its website, Sainsbury’s said "the Sport Relief Games take place from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 March 2014, and the public can join in the fun by running, swimming or cycling their way to raising cash at over a thousand venues around the country."
The title sponsor said the "Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games" aims to encourage thousands to raise money for some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in communities across the UK and the rest of the world, by taking part in events at over a thousand locations throughout the country, including the Aquatics Centre and Lee Valley VeloPark, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Celebrities like Kimberley Walsh are already working up a sweat, preparatory to the events. Posing for a workout photo, the singer recreated shots from Olivia Newton-John’s iconic video ‘Physical’, to showcase the launch of the official Sport Relief Headband, now available in Sainsbury’s stores nationwide.

Commenting after her workout Friday, February 21, 2014, Kimberley Wash said “Everyone loves this iconic still from the Let’s Get Physical video, with Olivia Newton-John looking ultra-cool in her headband and workout gear. Amazingly the track was in the charts when I was born, 32 years ago, so it totally made sense to get involved in this revival shoot to launch this year’s official Sport Relief Headband available from Sainsbury’s, and to pay tribute to Olivia. I urge everyone to join in the fun by getting the gear and registering at sportrelief.com.”
Sainsbury's, a major high street grocer, has been a supporter of Comic Relief since 1999 and says "..as we continue our legacy of support for sport we hope that even more people this year will get behind these events and embrace all the new challenges of running, swimming or cycling to help smash our previous fundraising target and make a real difference to those most in need here and overseas."
Sainsbury's says fund-raising activities will be taking place across all Sainsbury’s stores during the games, from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 March, and will include a nationwide flash mob dance on Friday 21 March across all stores to help generate further funds for Sport Relief.
Sainsbury’s out-going CEO, Justin King, who has a previous fund-raising total of £70,000 is hope to surpass the figure this year.
The Chief Executive said: “I’m really looking forward to meeting our colleagues across the country as I get set for my final Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile Challenge, ending in a run, swim and cycle in London Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Sunday 23rd March. The commitment from our colleagues to raise funds in previous years has been incredible and they really do go the extra mile”.
