Woolwich: Greenwich Community College Teachers Protest

by Benson Agoha

* GCC Teaching Staff: "we feel undervalued."

Teachers of the Greenwich Community College are staging a few hours protest outside the college premises on Plumstead Road, Woolwich, although there is not picketing as students are gaining entrance into the building.

A teaching staff told Woolwich Online that the protest will last only a few hours and they will go back to class.

According to her, the teachers are staging the protest because they feel undervalued and demoralised.

The teaching staff said GCC management wants them to do 14% more teaching a week, but to take 8.5% less holiday.

Besides, they said they have not had a pay rise since 2007, where as top managers of the college get a 7% annual "management allowance", regardless of performance.

The say they are excellent and dedicated teachers and deserve more than they are getting.

There was no immediate management response to the ongoing protest and visitors were not yet being allowed into the premises.
