Lewisham: Works Starts On Lewisham Gateway As Town Center Pursues Transformation

by Benson Agoha

Works have begun on the new Lewisham Gateway - a new development at the heart of Lewisham that is set to transform the town centre and create a new Confluence point.
* Artist's Impression: The Lewisham Gateway will radically transform Lewisham Town Centre.

The works will necessitate changes to the station road and remove the round-about to make way for enlargment of the current converging road, Molesworth Street, Loampit Vale, Lewisham Road, and Lewisham High Street.
Even Rennell Street will be redesigned and enlarged, just as parts of the urban river is also set to be redirected.

Building and reconstruction of the Town Center is to be spaced and spread over 18 months.

The project will bring two landmark buildings, featuring new homes and retail space, to the Town Centre. It will also bring a new unique park at the heart of the new development as the new Confluence Place.

The project is Lewisham Town Centre's largets and most exciting dovelopment project and is set to deliver New jobs, new homes, shops and other amenities.  There will also be open spaces and a new road layout to help create a more accessible and better connected town centre.

The first phase has already commenced at the site of the former bus stand.

Because the project necessitates a new road layout, Lewisham Council said the roundabout will have to be removed and the converging roads (Molesworth Street, Loampit Vale, Lewisham Road, and Lewisham High Street) reconfigured.

But Woolwich Online gathered from site personnel that the public are not happy about the changes, although they should be when the job is completed. And to address their concerns, visitors are provided with a Comment Form, where they can give their opinion.

Further enquiries revealed that the new facility will see the Lewisham Library relocated, bringing it closer to the Town Centres new ultra-modern and colourful Lesisure Centre (below) completed about a year ago.
