Woolwich: Petitioners And Supporters Move To Save Marks And Spencer Store From Closure

by Benson Agoha

365 persons have signed an online petition against the closure of the Woolwich Branch of High Street retailer, Marks & Spencer.

It comes as Marks and Spencer management announced a new Business Proposal to close various stores in response to reports of declining sales in recent times.

Marks & Spencer was opened in Woolwich in 1913 and currently employs 53 staff.

At 101 years, the petitioners say the majority of  customers have shopped with the store since they were young, growing and doing things together.

* Marks & Spencer, Woolwich has been marked for closure.

The petition said the store has come a long way and has become part of the community and its closure will affect not just the staff but the community.

The petition said "We are fighting to save not only our Woolwich Marks & Spencer, but to save the
whole community from any further deterioration of a much loved High Street," adding "We are asking for everyone everywhere to support us in saving our Store."

The petition urged the public to "Please sign and share as much as possible," saying "this could make a huge difference."

The petition has attracted 35 comments including this one from a staff member who wrote "Save our store!!!! It's not just a store your closing down your splitting our family up!!!!!"

While another supporter wrote: "I am a woman in my 70s and I still remember when I came to this store with my mum and gran the area the families always associate the store with the past and the future , to close this store would be very wrong t would be taking away my memories and part of my life will go and never be seen ! please reconsider this decision its a silly silly mistake."
