Germany's number one football fan, Chancellor Angela Merkel and President, Joachim Gauck were seen congratulating the coaching crew of head coach Joachim Loew and his assistant, Hansi Flick, and the goalkeeper coach Andreas Koepke, after the victory at the Maracana Statdium in the Brazilian capital Rio de Janeiro.

Yesterday's win was celebrated by the Germans, their supporters and the rest of Europe. And for good reason.

While Germany celebrated what became their fourth win, Europe celebrated a european country winning the World Cup in a non-european soil, for the first time.

And it was not just Germany that made Europe proud. Another European country also won outside Europe, in the same tournament, as Netherlands beat host nation, Brazil, to take the 3rd place.

The Germans showed great tenacity from their first game, through to last night's final.  But then, they always take every World Cup tournament seriously.

Congratulations Germany.
