Media reports say two “Arabic flags similar to those used by Islamic State have been seen” inside the Lindt cafe in Martin Place. Live reports by Sky television showed hostages escaping from the building which has already been surrounded by security forces.

Australia raised its terror alert level in recent months after fears that ISIS or similar agencies may have been planning to carry out open terror attacks on its streets. But analysts say this might just be a lone wolf and not necessarily linked to ISIS or well-known organised terror groups.

Media reports say Australia’s Channel Ten had already spoken to two hostages who told them the gunman claimed to have four bombs planted in strategic places, with two of the bombs feared to be planted inside the Lindt Café itself, while two others were planted in the financial district.

As the hostages escaped, security forces were trying to ensure that escaping hostages were not mistakenly shot in the unfolding drama.

Sky News reported a Journalist claiming to have a clear view of the Lindt from his position. Chris Reason told colleagues that the the gunman was "extremely agitated" when the hostages fled.
