As Royal Greenwich invests over £5m across all leisure centres, improving changing rooms and improving pools, gyms and exercise studios, its Libraries are also receiving good patronage, encouraging residents to read while they keep fit.
The Royal Borough of Greenwich is continuing to buck the national trend with its library service having seen over 600 people attend Woolwich library as it opened for the first time on Sunday this weekend (1 March 2015).
The extended opening hours are the latest in a long line of measures to meet the needs of local residents wanting to access our libraries – Greenwich will benefit from a new library opening over the next few months, plans will be put forward to improve the library service in Plumstead and all our libraries have improved IT access. The investment in our libraries is being rolled out at a time when many other Councils are having to close their libraries down.
Over 600 people visited Woolwich Library as it opened its doors for the first time on a Sunday during its new opening hours of 12pm and 4pm.
Scores of customers made the most of the facilities and activities on offer with 78 families attending the Baby Rhyme Time session and over 100 people taking part in the ‘Messy Afternoon’ craft event - just two of the many regular events held in our libraries.
Councillor Miranda Williams, Royal Borough of Greenwich cabinet member for Culture and Creative industries said:
“It was great to see over 600 people visiting Woolwich Library on the first Sunday it was open.
“It is already London’s busiest library and the second busiest in the UK and we hope that by listening to local residents and opening it across the weekend, even more local people will take advantage of all it has to offer.
“It is all part of our plans to improve our local libraries at a time when many Councils are having to close theirs down. The new Greenwich Centre, containing a new library and leisure centre, will open this spring. We will be consulting local residents over improvements to the library service in Plumstead which could see a new library, leisure facilities, cultural and community space for residents under one roof.”
Library user Harriet Nabisere, said: “I think it is brilliant having the library opening on a Sunday. I come to the library during the week but now I can even come on Sundays with my son.”
Library user Prashiya Gautem, said: “Me and my daughter had a really fun time at the library this Sunday, and now we can come every Sunday as well.”
