Newly elected MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, Mathew Pennycook said he was delighted to attend the reception organised to congratulate him and other MPs reelected on May 7 general elections.

Speaking at the event, the MP said the event was in fact his first public engagement since his becoming an MP and thanked the church for the work they do in the community, including the work their church members do outside.

He said people are excited when he tells them he comes from the Royal Borough of Greenwich, but do not seem to know that the borough also has its concerns for the people.

He said "it is interesting that people are happy for us when I tell them that I am from the Royal Borough of Greenwich," adding "they often point at the many Heritage Buildings we have in the borough."

But he said beyond those heritage buildings, are areas within the borough which aren’t so glamorous and for which the council will always strive to make better.

“What we need to think of is how to work together to alleviate the suffering of the poorer members who need gas to cook and heat up their homes in winter, those who are homeless, as well as those who are in detention,” he said.

The newly-elected MP said he hopes that working together with NWC, this will be realised.

He was presented with a commemorative gift and said he would display it in his new office so that visitors can see it.
