New Wine Church celebrates the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s new MPs

Woolwich, 28 May 2015 – New Wine Church formed the melting pot for both the civic and religious leaders of the community as they came together in a special reception to honour the new Mayor, Council Leader & MPs of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

This reception was held in honour of Teresa Pearce, the MP for Erith & Thamesmead, Clive Efford, the MP for Eltham and the newly elected MP for Greenwich & Woolwich, Matthew Pennycook.

The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Councillor Norman Adams and the leader of the Council, Councillor Denise Hyland were also in attendance.

All five of them were given awards by the church’s pastor, Pastor Michael Olawore in recognition of their service to the Royal Borough of Greenwich. He thanked each of them individually for their service to the public in years past and encouraged them to partner with the church to help the less privileged in the borough.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were the deputy Mayor, Councillor Olu Babatola and the Ward’s Councillors - Barbara Barwick; John Fahy & Jackie Smith.

Also present were numerous faith leaders, including the Ecumenical Borough Deans from all across the borough including Pastor Segun Adenuga from the Redeemed Christian Church of God. They were hosted by the Cabinet members and numerous team leaders from within New Wine Church.

In his keynote address, Pastor Michael said that with the joint efforts of the churches across the Borough and the community leaders would make the Royal Borough of Greenwich not only the best place in London but in the entire country.

Pastor Michael Olawore was extremely pleased with the success of the event.

“This is an historic opportunity for those who lead and serve the faith community to meet the Members of Parliament and interact with a view of building relationships”.

All of the award recipients expressed their gratitude to and support for New Wine Church for its engagement with the community. In her speech, Teresa Pearce MP how pleased she was that many of her constituents had benefited from the Christmas hampers distributed by the church.

New Wine Church plays an active part in the community by feeding the less privileged a hot, full English breakfast every Saturday morning. In addition, the church’s food bank, ‘John Wilson’s Pantry’ is a vital source of provision for many in the community who visit regularly.

Every year, New Wine donates thousands of Christmas hampers to single mothers, the house bound, the elderly and low income families to ensure that their families are not deprived of the opportunity to enjoy a complete Christmas dinner.

In his closing remarks, Pastor Michael added, “It is our sincere hope that this marks the foundation of the platform for partnerships to make the community a thriving place for all.”
