Petition over relocation of Skate Park: Consult Park Users Before Putting it in Charlton Park, say Friends of Charlton Park

by Benson Agoha | Woolwich

An aparent plan by the Royal Borough of Greenwich to relocate the Greenwich Skate Park, from it's current Woolwich site, to the Charlton Park, has become subject of petition by the Friends of Charlton Park.

It comes as Berkeley Homes has reached advanced stage of splitting the area into project units divided into several phases, as part of its development of the Royal Arsenal Riverside.

Although the Skate Park has not been dismantled, it is general knowledge that this is a mater of time because of proposed plan to line the Riverside with high rise buildings.

Landscaping experts have also mapped out large chunk of land which has been added to the former carpark, and together now form a new park under development.

But in an online petition on the Change.org, Friends of Charlton Park said local residents view Charlton Park as an oasis of calm at the community’s heart.

The friends this `oasis of calm' is threatened if we don’t do something soon about Greenwich Council's plans for our Charlton Park to be the site of a skateboard area.

They want the Council to go through a formal consultation with the public before siting a skate park there.

Arguing further, they said Royal Greenwich failed to carry out a safety and security feasibility study of the park and accused borrough bosses of planning to push their plan through by administrative fiat.

We entirely support the need for a skateboarding facility somewhere, especially now the council has sold the existing one in Woolwich to housing developers. We believe the replacement should be where there are suitable facilities and good transport links. And that the the whole community should be given a chance to be involved in final decision on a location.

The council failed to consult residents about locating it in Charlton Park and just told us to choose between three sites in the park. They have failed to carry out a safety and security feasibility study. And they are trying to push the plan through by excluding from their meetings anyonewho disagrees with the concept!

"We entirely support the need for a skateboarding facility somewhere, especially now the council has sold the existing one in Woolwich to housing developers," they said, adding "We believe the replacement should be where there are suitable facilities and good transport links."

The said the whole community should be given a chance to be involved in final decision on a location and are looking for 100 persons to support their cause by signing the petition.

  1. Surely the users of the skate park need to be consulted, not just the the Friends.
