New cycle parking rolled out across the Royal Greenwich

by WO Staff | Greenwich

The Royal Borough of Greenwich is installing brand new secure bike parking facilities in locations across the borough, to allow cyclists even more access to safe, secure and easy bike storage.

The borough is currently rolling out a programme using funds from Transport for London, to install new bike parking across Council estates and is also trialing it in on-street locations. So far new cycle parking has been put into 24 estates, with another nine estates to receive cycle parking by the end of this month.

The borough is also trialing new on-street secure cycle parking facilities and has so far put in two new cycle parks - in Coleraine Road, close to Westcombe Park station and on Winforton Street near the junction with Point Hill. The trial is proving very popular so the council is looking to extend the scheme and wants to hear from residents interested in getting new bike parking in their street.

The facilities being installed are ‘bike hangars’ and ‘lockers’.  Made from galvanised steel, the designs offer a safe and effective way to lock bikes up and protect them from tough weather conditions or theft and vandalism. Accessing your bike is easy too and it works on a rental basis where you rent a space and get a key for a minimal annual cost. Cycle parking facilities installed in Council housing estates are available to rent for a returnable £20 deposit.

Councillor Danny Thorpe, Royal Borough of Greenwich Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport said: “We don’t want anyone to be put off cycling because they aren’t sure where to conveniently and safely store their bikes, so we’re making this investment in secure, high quality cycle parking in locations across the borough – and we’re always keen to hear from residents if they would like such a facility in their area."

"It’s all about making it as easy as possible to use a bike, which can be a great alternative to getting in the car. Obviously there are health benefits to cycling and you can make significant savings on travel costs, petrol and parking too. It also helps our overall aim to make the borough greener and to reduce carbon emissions – I really do urge people to give it a go”

Pupils in the royal borough are also getting access to new facilities to keep their bikes secure and safe in school. In total 66 of the royal borough’s schools currently have secure cycle parking.. So far this year Eglington, Brooklands and Christ Church Primaries have had new cycle parking facilities installed, with the first two schools also creating scooter parking as lots of children are using scooters to get to school.
