Egypt Steps Up Reprisal As No Less Than 100 "Terrorists" Killed

Cairo — Egypt military has killed more than 100 "terrorists" in a stepped-up activity against perpetrators of Wednesday's attacks on security posts in North Sinai earlier in the day.

A group named Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis which is based in Sinai reportedly claimed responsibility for "a string of attacks which targeted security checkpoints and facilities in North Sinai," according media sources.

A total of 17 personnel from the army were killed or injured, the army said - a sharp contrast to reports of 50 and 64 in different international media.

"The armed forces said on television that the deceased army personnel include four officers, adding that 13 were injured.", according to All Africa.

Wednesday's simultaneous attacks, targeted security checkpoints and was coming only days after the country's State Prosecutor, Hisham Barakat, was killed in a Cairo bomb attack.

The attacks appeared to have been well timed too, and executed just two days to the second anniversary of former Islamist President, Mohamed Morsi's removal from office. He has since been convicted for a string of allegations including inciting violence and assisting prisoners to escape from Prison.

But following the stepped up operation, Egypt army said many of the "terrorists" were injured in the operations, assisted by the air force.
