Crossrail Update: Concreting Train Arrives At Plumstead, Tunnel Fit-out Begins

by Benson Agoha | Crossrail

If you have been wanting to know how far the Crossrail scheme is progressing on the southern side of the capital - the answer is progress is being made.

As we update you a while ago, tracks have been laid on the surface portion of the project between, Plumstead and AbbeyWood and works continue to progress.

At Abbey Wood, a new pedestrian crossing have been built - much bigger than the one there before and the old Station has been demolish, a temporary one put in use and the new station getting ready.
* Concreting Train

As far as the tunnels go, tunneling have since been completed and the Woolwich Station, deep underground is being fitted.

Crossrail has now announced the arrival of the concreting train in Plumstead. Reason? Because the tunneling of the project from the southeast began there. It is from there that the concreting section of the job, which will see the platforms being constructed will begin.

Plumstead depot is the nerve-centre for the railway operation for the crossrail installation of the track and signalling equipment and although it rarely features in the news, a whole is happening from Plumstead.

Plumstead provided the base for the tunneling work and the facility used for that section of the project has since been dismantled and a new facility installed for the next segment.

* Track fit-out
The concreting machine/train that has just arrived was brought in from France, across the Chanel in a refurbished condition. It is very very long - actually expanded specially to use on crossrail.

The concreting train is loaded up in day time and moved into the tunnel from Plumstead along the 26 miles of the tunneling part part of the project.

Current segments of the project include fitting the Railway systems which include laying tracks, installing power systems, building platforms, electrical connections, lifts and escalators installation and station fit-out - all of which are need to make the station work reliably and safely.

The train will be used in the fit-out of Crossrail’s standard track slab along the Crossrail route from Plumstead and will enter service next month.

Simon Wright, Crossrail Programme Director said: “Crossrail is being delivered on time and within budget. Following the completion of Crossrail’s 26-mile tunneling marathon, our focus has shifted to the fit-out of the tunnels and stations. The arrival of the concreting train at Plumstead - the logistical nerve centre for this phase of Crossrail’s delivery - will bring us another step towards the completion of this major new railway for London and the South East.”
