It is less than two weeks to go until the Royal Borough of Greenwich once again plays host to a glorious fleet of traditional Tall Ships – as this year’s 5 day Tall Ships festival gets underway across the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The Tall Ships are a major draw for people, attracting large numbers of visitors into the borough, giving a boost to local businesses, plus it’s a superb free festival for local people to enjoy.

This year, residents and visitors can once again look on as the majestic fleet of up to 15 tall ships are moored along the borough’s riverfront, in Woolwich and Greenwich, from Thursday 27 August until Monday 31 August. The festival also includes a fantastic free fireworks display every evening and a host of family-friendly entertainment.

One of the main highlights will be a free day of festivities on Saturday 29 August - at the Royal Arsenal and in Woolwich Town Centre and General Gordon Square – being hosted by the Royal Borough and Berkeley Homes.

People have the chance to pre-book to board the vessels for free as they’re moored along the riverfront and there’ll be live music, traditional funfair rides, a vintage car show, family entertainment and a host of food stalls and licensed bars and nautical movies on the Big Screen.

Councillor Miranda Williams, Royal Borough of Greenwich Cabinet Member for Culture and Creative Industries said: “It will be wonderful to see the Tall Ships once again come back ‘home’ to the Royal Borough and I urge as many people as possible to get out and experience the festivities on offer," adding "The Tall Ships are a great draw for people and these festivals attract huge numbers, adding to our already excellent offer as a visitor destination."

The Cabinet Member said: "This all helps boost our local economy and of course, it’s great for local people to have this on their doorstep – make sure you don’t miss out, there’s something for all the family.”

This year the Tall Ships are due to arrive on Thursday 27 August, mooring for 5 days mostly in Woolwich, with two of the largest and best known vessels – the Dar Mlodziezy and Santa Maria Manuela being moored at Tall Ships Island, in the river at Maritime Greenwich.

Residents and visitors can purchase tickets for a special Thames Clipper service taking them out to the two ships for tours. People can also book cruises on the Tall Ships with Sail Royal Greenwich.

All of the Tall Ships are due to set off in a spectacular parade of sail at 2:00pm on Monday 31 August from off Cutty Sark Gardens in Greenwich, sailing majestically down the river and out to sea – a sight not to be missed.
