RINEY: Royal Greenwich Contractor Wins Highest Standard For Vehicle Safety

by our RBG Correspondent | Woolwich

One of the Royal Borough’s most commonly recognised contractors has been awarded the highest possible standard for vehicle safety.

JB Riney carries out a range of works for the Royal Borough mainly involving road and pavement works and construction and their vehicles are a visible presence in the borough. Last year the Royal Borough delivered £10million of road repairs, maintenance and improvements in the borough, which required a significant amount of associated vehicle movement, much of which included JB Riney vehicles.

The firm has now been awarded the highest gold standard for the safety its fleet of vehicles in the TfL Freight Operator Recognition Scheme.

The Royal Borough requires the highest possible safety standards from all contractors who have vehicles on the borough’s roads. Also, a key part of the Royal Borough’s cycling strategy has been to improve even further safety standards for cyclists on the borough’s roads.

Achieving the gold standard means JB Riney vehicles:

* are fitted with cycle safety side guards, side proximity sensors, recordable cameras and class V & VI mirrors (special mirrors that give better all-around visibility) to their LGV (light goods vehicle) fleet

* have side sensors fitted to 3.5 tonne vehicles also. All new 3.5 tonne and upward vehicles will be specified with all side guards, sensors and audible turn warning

* are also recognised for their green credentials meeting the latest emission standards as a contract requirement, they have also looked at their company car profile and added hybrid vehicles with low CO2 emissions

Their drivers are encouraged to “drive greener” by adopting safe and fuel efficient styles of driving they have seen a year on year increase in MPG and reduction in CO2 emissions

Congratulating JB Riney on the achievement, Cllr Danny Thorpe, the Royal Borough’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport said: “This is really important for the royal borough as it means we can be assured these numerous vehicles meet the very highest possible standards – over and above what is usually expected of goods vehicles on our roads."

"This is something we aim for from all contractors and I’d urge all other such operators in the borough to follow this extremely good lead set by JB Riney. In particular this offers a lot of protection to cyclists which is a real positive as we want as many people as possible to think about using a bike to get around and creating a safer road environment should help give people more confidence to get out on two wheels.”
