There’s help and advice on hand for the Royal Borough’s 16-year-olds as they await their GCSE results later this month.

A host of advice and support is being lined up by schools and by the Royal Borough, with the aim of giving students the advice they need to plan positively for their future as they map out their post-16 options.

It includes a roadshow called ‘Your Future – Made in Greenwich’, which is hosted by the Royal Borough’s advice service for young people, and will tour the borough during August and September. The roadshow will offer free advice for young people – and their parents – on how to make the most of the options available.

From this year, all young people are now required to remain in some form of training or education until the age of 18. There is a wide range of options in the Royal Borough for students, offered at a range of schools, colleges and sixth form centres. As well as A levels and AS levels, there is a range of vocational BTEC courses, NVQs, and a chance to study for further GCSEs. Traineeships and apprenticeships can be a great way to learn work-related skills, and these can be combined with study for qualifications in a range of subjects including practical skills, English and Maths.

Careers advisers in schools are an important source of advice for students weighing up their options. Advisers will be available on results day in schools to advise on opportunities available.

The Point, the Royal Borough’s one-stop service for young people, based in the heart of Woolwich, also has specialist advisers to give young people a steer in exploring their options for training and education. The Point is open Monday to Friday and will also host a one-day event on apprenticeships and training, on Thursday 20 August.

Cllr John Fahy, Deputy Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “For young people waiting for exam results this month, it can be an anxious time, but also an exciting time" adding “I would encourage young people to take advantage of all the help and support that’s available as you think through your options.”

The roadshow ‘Your Future – Made in Greenwich’ will tour the borough on the following dates, offering young people a chance to meet with specialist advisers to discuss education and training options:
