Inaugural Greenwich Cycle Forum Meeting Gets Off To A Flying Start

by our Correspondent | Woolwich

The first meeting of the Greenwich Cycle Forum got off to a flying start when members met on 16 September.
* An e-fit of the Charlton Woolwich 'missing link' Walk Way
Chaired by Councillor Danny Thorpe, Cabinet Member for Regeneration & Transport, the annual meeting was the first since the launch of the Royal Borough’s Cycling Strategy in April 2014.

Around 30 residents and local stakeholder groups heard presentations by officers that outlined progress against actions within the Cycling Strategy. This included:

* Hearing more detail on completed flagship schemes across the borough, such as the Ridgeway project;

* More about the Royal Borough’s cycling behaviour change programmes, such as led rides, maintenance classes and cycle training sessions;

* Future plans were unveiled, including how the ‘Missing Link’ in Charlton/Woolwich Riverside on the Thames

Path would be addressed with a new alignment proposed to avoid a busy section of the Woolwich Road;
* An e-fit of the Charlton-Woolwich 'missing link
Stakeholders also had an opportunity to express their views on recently completed schemes, and take part in a mapping exercise took place to suggest potential improvements that could be taken forward as part of the Cycling Strategy.

Councillor Thorpe said: “Encouraging more people to take up active travel is a key priority for the borough – more walking and cycling benefits personal well-being and health and the environment."

"In today’s sedentary age, cycling is a fantastic way to get out and get fit without it even seeming like it’s even an effort. We’re creating some excellent cycling opportunities within the borough and the Forum gives us a great opportunity to hear people’s views on our progress with the Cycling Strategy.”
