The author who sold over 500 million copies of several bestsellers around the world has had 8 of her novels adapted for the screen as film or for television mini-series.

Today, her elder sister Joan Collins said she was devastated by the news, having just learnt that she has cancer two weeks ago.

A statement released by the family on Facebook read: "It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the death of our beautiful, dynamic and one of a kind mother, Jackie Collins, who died of breast cancer today."

"She lived a wonderfully full life and was adored by her family, friends and the millions of readers who she has been entertaining for the past four decades."

"She was a true inspiration, a trail blazer for women in fiction and a creative force. She will live on through her characters but we already miss her beyond words."

The family statement said services will be held privately for the family in the USA and UK and directs sympathizers who wish to send flowers to make donations instead as follow:

1) For USA: Donations should be sent, in lieu of flowers, to the:
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Organization.

2) For UK: Donations should be sent, in lieu of flowers, to:
