NHS Worker Fails To Take Care Over Declaring Employment On Fraudulent Benefit Claims

by RBG Correspondent | Woolwich

Ms Adedewe Folashade, a 50 year old NHS healthcare assistant from Plumstead SE18, has been sentenced to 26 weeks imprisonment, suspended for 2 years and ordered to work 100 hours unpaid in the community, after being found guilty of defrauding the Royal Borough of Greenwich of Housing Benefit totalling over £17,000.

Ms Folashade declared her work as an NHS healthcare assistant to the royal borough but failed to declare that she had also undertaken a variety of other jobs with the NHS over a 5 year period.

The fraud was discovered by the royal borough’s Internal Audit & Anti-fraud team who then interviewed Ms Folashade under caution. She was unable to explain why she had not declared her extra income and apologised.

Ms Folashade attended Bexley Magistrates Court on 4 September and pleaded guilty to one offence under the Fraud Act 2006 relating to £17,803.03 in overpaid Housing Benefit during the period from February 2009 to June 2014. This is now being repaid to the royal borough. Ms Folashade was also ordered to pay the royal borough costs of £200 and a victim surcharge of £80.

Councillor Maureen O’Mara, Cabinet Member for Customer Services (top), said: “This is a significant sum of public money, claimed falsely. We make it clear to new and existing claimants that they have a duty to be honest with us about their earnings and declare all employment. Housing benefit is intended for people who are genuinely in need and every penny of the money that Ms Folashade defrauded from the public purse will be repaid.”
