Novak Djokovic Wins US Open Tennis Championships

by Benson Agoha | Sports

Novak Djokovic has defeated Roger Federer in four sets to win his second U.S. Open championship and tenth Grand Slam singles title. He beat Federer 6-4; 5-7; 6-4; 6-4 to clinch the title.

At the post-game mid-night press conference, Djokovic tried to be modest, saying he would not really say he was dominating tennis, but felt very proud of his achievements.

He said "..winning a grand slam is very special for a tennis player. When you are dreaming of becoming a tennis player, when you are finding the motivation and inspiration, these are the kinds of things you dream of winning".

He said to win again in 2015, after 2011, is incredible, made more so by the fact that he played against one of the best players in the world - a gland slam champion. Somebody who keeps on fighting till the last moment and who would make you play an extra shot.

Djokovic said all these make the win very special for him. He said was grateful to his team for their contribution to making him play as well as he did all these years. "It's something that I would remember for a long time."

He said it has been an incredible season and he has been fortunate to experience a great success this year. He said though the season was not over, but the Grand Slam is now over.

"Now that I am actually sitting here with this trophy, reflecting on what I have achieved is incredible and I am quite satisfied with that."

He praised Roger Federer and agreed that he was incredibly good as well, improving his game and upping his stake with each game played. He said he expected him to play on for much longer.

He said his game has changed since he won it in 2011 because he was now a different player.

"As a father and husband...I feel more fulfilled now than in 2011, I am a married man, better experienced, physically tougher as well and trying to use the experience I have gained in the past to overcome the difficulties that I come across."

He said he did not begrudge Federer for the seeming strong support from the crowd because of the number of years he has played and won the grand slam.He said he believe he would win their support in future as well.

Djokovic defeated M. Cilic 6-0, 6-1; 6-2 in the Semifinals. The ladies singles was won by Flavia Pennetta.
* David Beckham was among celebrities that saw the game.
