Results Show That Primary Schools In Royal Greenwich Remain Top-class

Primary schools in Royal Greenwich have once again shown that they are among the best in the country at helping pupils to make progress.

In the latest results from national tests, Greenwich came equal fourth-highest in England for the number of 11-year-olds who reached or exceeded the required standard (Level 4) in reading, writing and maths, seen as the most significant measure of achievement.

For performance at the higher standard (Level 5 or above), Greenwich did even better, coming third-best in the country. Royal Greenwich’s figure this year, which shows 35 per cent achieving at Level 5 or above, is 4 percentage points up on last year’s rate and 11 percentage points above the national average.

In reading, Greenwich saw 92 per cent of pupils achieving a Level 4 or above in reading - three per cent above the national average. In writing tests, 90 per cent achieved a Level 4 or better, while in maths the figure was 91 per cent (three and four per cent above the national average respectively).

Greenwich schools have also demonstrated their ability to help children make progress. The proportion of pupils improving by two or more levels between their teacher assessments at age 7, and the tests at age 11, was 94 per cent for reading, 97 per cent for writing and 94 per cent for maths. This was at least three per cent above the national average in each case.

Cllr John Fahy, Deputy Leader of the Royal Borough and Cabinet Member for Children’s Services said: “These results show further improvement on the already excellent levels of achievement by 11 year-olds in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

“To be the equal fourth best-performing borough in the country for Level 4 and above in reading, writing and mathematics is something that we can be incredibly proud of.

“Once again, Royal Greenwich is in the top quarter of authorities in every indicator of achievement – a demonstration that the high standard of education and support offered by our schools is being sustained year upon year.”
