Israel will revoke its citizenship for anyone joining Islamic State in a new measure to discourage people travel to Syria to fight on their behalf, according to a report by the Jerusalem Post.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (left) on Sunday at the Israeli cabinet meeting when he told ministers that indictments were filed last week against citizens planning to join the terrorist group, JP said.
The report said the Israeli PM has asked Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein to advance steps to revoke their citizenship as well.
“Whoever joins ISIS will not be an Israeli citizen. And if he leaves the borders of the state, he will not return. I think this lesson is becoming increasingly clear throughout the international arena, and it is fitting that we lead this effort as well,” JP quotes Netanyahu as saying.
The new tough stance adopted by Israel is expected to be replicated in other countries following last Friday's UN resolution urging all nations to do all they can within their power to destroy the evil called Islamic State.
Britain, United States, Australia, whose former PM Tony Abbott warned Europe about the danger of allowing free inflow of refugees from Syria just weeks before the last attack on Paris, are among countries believed to be considering such moves.
