It was yet another fantastic year at Eltham Lights Up as residents turned up in their thousands on 19 November for the annual festive season illuminations event. It was a chilly and cold, yet fantastic night, as great entertainment got underway on the stage and streets in Eltham.
It was yet another fantastic year at Eltham Lights Up as residents turned up in their thousands on 19 November for the annual festive season illuminations event. It was a chilly and cold, yet fantastic night, as great entertainment got underway on the stage and streets in Eltham.
The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich Councillor Norman Adams and Clive Efford MP switched on the Christmas tree lights and high street decorations, and over 5,000 people watched as Eltham High Street was closed to traffic for a spectacular illuminated parade of lanterns, created by hundreds of local children and their families, for the annual Lantern parade.
The crowds were entertained with music and sports activities throughout the 3 hour extravaganza.
The new GreenwichOne Card was available for residents to get hold of at the Eltham Leisure Centre – over 100 people picked one up on the evening – and shops stayed open till late offering many discounts for GreenwichOne Card members.
Business owner Mindy Bunger at Fashion World in Eltham High Street said, “GreenwichOne Card members are welcome to shop at our clothing shop and receive 10% discount. We will also be involved on Black Friday having many sales on various items.”
Rami, a resident from Greenwich who attended Eltham Lights Up, said: “The turnout was very good this year. The entertainment was 1st class and the children did very well during the parade. I will be definitely getting myself a GreenwichOne Card.”
The Christmas lights were switched on at 6pm by the Mayor Norman Adams and attended by Clive Efford MP and the leading councillor and cabinet member Denise Hyland.
Cabinet Member for Culture & Creative Industries, Cllr Miranda Williams, said: “Eltham Lights Up improves year on year and gives a great kick-start to the Christmas festivities and the local economy. It was a terrific night to launch the GreenwichOne Card and interacting on social media throughout the night. We now move onto Woolwich and Greenwich for the Christmas celebrations.”
Up-coming Events:
The Greenwich Christmas Festival takes place at Cutty Sark Gardens on Saturday 27 November and the Woolwich Winter Warmer event takes place on Saturday 5 December, and Greenwich.
