Lest We Forget - Royal Greenwich Remembers Our Fallen Heroes From Two World Wars

The Royal Borough of Greenwich joins together in remembrance for those who lost their lives in two World Wars.

Remembrance is part of modern British life, culture and heritage. It becomes a particular feature of the public calendar each year when public Remembrance events take place throughout the UK.

A number of ceremonies are set to take place from 7 November. To mark Remembrance Day on Wednesday 11 November, a number of wreath laying ceremonies organised by the British Legion will take place in Charlton, Blackheath, Plumstead, Abbey Wood, Eltham and Woolwich. The full list of events: 

Saturday 7th November :

Charlton and Blackheath - 10.45am - Wreath laying ceremonies organised by the Royal British Legion (Blackheath & Charlton Branch) beginning at the Memorial at Maze Hill, SE3, then on to St. Johns Church, Stratheden Road, SE3, then on to the Memorial in Charlton Village, SE7, then on to the Memorial in Cemetery Lane, SE7.

Plumstead - 10.40am - Wreath laying ceremonies organised by the Royal British Legion (Abbey Wood and Thamesmead) beginning at the memorial in Plumstead Cemetery, Cemetery Road, off Upper Wickham Lane, SE2 then on to the memorial in Woolwich New Cemetery, Camdale Road, SE18. 

Sunday 8th November:

Eltham -10.45am - A morning Remembrance Day Parade and Service organised by the Royal British Legion (Eltham & Well Hall Branch). A Parade of veterans, ex-service groups and youth organisations, will lay wreaths at a ceremony at Eltham War Memorial and two minutes silence at 11.00am. This will then be followed by a Remembrance service in St. John’s Church, Eltham Hill.

Abbey Wood -10.40am - A morning Remembrance service organised by the Royal British Legion (Abbey Wood and Thamesmead Branch) at St, Michaels and All Angels Church, Abbey Wood Road, SE2, then on to the Abbey Wood Memorial at Abbey Wood Gardens, Rosedale Close, SE2.

The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich Councillor Norman Adams said, “Every year we as a nation fall silent for two minutes to remember those soldiers and service personnel who died in two world wars. We are safer here in the UK because of their sacrifice and we owe them our gratitude.”
