Woolwich Station Fit-out In Progress As Crossrail Releases Beautiful Design For New Fully Accessible Trains

Crossrail has announced the release of the design for fully accessible trains due to be brought into service when the project launches in May 2017 with services from Liverpool to Seinfeld.

By 2019 when Crossrail is expected to fully operational, the open, clean and bright trains will help Crossrail add 10% to the capital's rail capacity.

In a statement published on the company's website, the design was jointly unveiled by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and Transport for London (Tfl).

The beautiful trains with bright, multi-coloured seats will be fully connect, open and accessible coaches. "The Trains have been designed with the highest technical standards and with passenger experience at the heart of everything", according to Crossrail.

The fully accessible coaches will be fitted with air-conditioning with climatic control and will neither be too hot in the summer, nor too cold in the winter. And they will contain designated wheelchair sections and additional multi-use spaces for prams, wheel-chairs and or bicycles - all to maximise passengers benefit.

Features of the new trains include:

* Air-conditioned walk-through carriages, with capacity for 1,500 customers, Wi-Fi and 4G.

* Lightweight and energy efficient design means 30 per cent less electricity use but faster journey times.

* Fully accessible for wheelchair users.

* Built by Bombardier in Derby, supporting 760 UK jobs and 80 apprenticeships.

Work on tracks laying is also advancing at Abbey Wood (above and right) and an interim station had to be opened and the old one demolished. Work has now begun to construct a new station and more than a mile of new track has been installed.

In Woolwich, Balfour Beatty, which won the contract for the station fit-out, has begun work on the £70m contract which covers two other portals at North Woolwich and Plumstead at either end of the Thames Tunnel where Crossrail trains will surface.

From 2018, Crossrail will begin up to 12 services an hour from Abbeywood through Woolwich. It will allow passengers to travel to Canary Wharf, the City and the West End without having to change trains.

The transformation of Woolwich will be enhanced by Crossrail on arrival and will be expected to accelerate regeneration of the South East. Journey times will be substantially reduced and and new transport links will be created.

The Woolwich Crossrail station is being constructed and will have two exits based in the Royal Arsenal.
