Royal Greenwich Councillors Donate Vital Supplies To Local Foodbank

by our RBG Correspondent | Woolwich

Councillors from the Royal Borough of Greenwich have donated Christmas hampers that had been sent to the Town Hall to the local Greenwich foodbank.

The hampers consist of vital foodstuffs which include porridge and packet soup as well as Christmas treats.

The Greenwich Foodbank is part of a national network of foodbanks, giving out nutritionally balanced emergency food to people in need.

Councillor Denise Hyland (top right), Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich said: “Christmas is a time for giving and is also a time when some people struggle to put food on the table."

"Greenwich Foodbank provides much needed supplies to people who may not have the income to buy everything they need for their families. It was very generous of ‘Be Counted’ to send hampers to Greenwich councillors and we really appreciated the gesture but we really felt that passing on the gift to people in need was the right thing to do."

The Royal Borough Leader said: "A lot of us tend to buy more than we need especially around Christmas time and I encourage anyone who has a spare tin of veg or anything non-perishable and in-date to donate it to this worthy cause.”

Greenwich Foodbank also won a 2014 Civic Award for their outstanding contribution Royal Borough.

Foodbanks can be found across the borough including Charlton House, The Woolwich Centre and The Eltham Centre.
