Holocaust Victims Remembered In Royal Greenwich On Holocaust Memorial Day

The Royal Borough of Greenwich remembered the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in a ceremony to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Wednesday 27 January, at the Town Hall, Woolwich.

Holocaust Memorial Day is marked each year on 27 January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. In addition to remembering the millions of victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution, Holocaust Memorial Day also remembers the victims of the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.

The theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day 2016 is Don’t Stand By, which reflects on how genocides have taken place because people allowed persecution to take root.

The event was open to the public and was led by the Mayor of Royal Greenwich, Councillor Norman Adams, with speeches from Deputy Leader John Fahy and prayers from five local faith leaders.

It also included a range of readings and a film called “Don’t stand by”, the official Holocaust Memorial Day 2016 Film, featuring Susan Pollack, a Holocaust survivor.

Pupils from Mulgrave School read their own monologues of war and the school’s choir also sang at the event.
