Nigeria: Police Rescues 13 Year Old Abducted And Forced Into Marriage

by Benson Agoha | Life

"If anyone had contacted me to say the girl had not been returned instead of just fabricating malicious lies we wouldnt be here now"~ Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Emir of Kano.

A girl of 14, kidnapped from Bayelsa State, and taken to Kano for marriage has been rescued by the Nigerian Police, according to latest reports from Nigeria. But it did not come easy.

Ese Oruru, then 13, was kidnapped by one Yinusa of the Housa tribe, and taken from Bayelsa in Nigeria's South East to Kano State in the North. She was then forced to marry him and as complaints continued, later converted her to Islam.

But although the incidence happened in 2015, the passage of time has not validated it and with civil rights activist Dr. Oby Ezekwesili taking up her case, the battled to return her resulted in exchange of letters.

The current Emir of Kano, is Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who was the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Today, the emir followed up on his promise to free the girl and have her returned to her family.

Latest news is that that order has now been obeyed and the child bride has been rescued and currently in custody of the Police.
