Kebbi State - The Red Onion Factory Of Nigeria Shows Of Bumper Produce

Some call it the the Great Onion Dump. Others call it the Onion Factory, but whichever side you're on, the photo above shows Nigeria's produce of the red onion is seeing bumper days.

Located in Kebbi State, the onion dumps produce can be a veritable source of foreign exchange for a country that depends so much on importation.

And even though Nigeria moved to increase groundnut production to match the pre-colonial days when pyramids made of groundnut were a common sight from the Northern part of the country, onion is a strong forex earner, now consumed all over the world especially in Europe where the red onion is often preferred for its strong flavours than the white onion.

There are about 1.8 million farmers, covering 15 states in the Agric-belt of Nigerias North that are expectedly to implement a programme for increased yield of agricultural produces.

States including Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Kebbi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara are expected to be stronger contributors to the success of the new programme.

But while primary produce is good, Nigeria does need to find ways for secondary production of the products, otherwise, foreign importers will continue to pay minimally for them.

These days, several derivative products from groundnuts are known to have made appearances in stores in Britain, and all are selling fast.

Perhaps the red onion can enjoy from diverse uses too.
