World famous boxer Muhammad Ali went the full round with a generous donation to Greenwich Starting Blocks last week.

The three-time world heavy weight champion donated £7,500 to the trust from his foundation and his wife Lonnie came to present the donation during a visit to a new exhibition dedicated to his life.

`I Am The Greatest: Muhammad Ali at The O2' opened on March 3 and as part of the day, Lonnie met Greenwich Starting Blocks athletes to officially hand over the cheque.

Present at the event were Tosin Oke, Triple Jumper, Zoe Smith, British Weightlifting Champion, Jenna O’Reilly, Boxer, as well as Peter Bundey, Chair of Greenwich Starting Blocks.

Peter Bundy said: “We are overjoyed to receive this magnificent gesture from the Muhammad Ali Family and Foundation. The funding received is hugely important and will make a real difference to the lives and future aspirations of so many local young talented athletes. It was a very special occasion for all of our athletes to meet Lonnie and hear first-hand the importance of sporting values of inspiration, achievement, equality and citizenship.

“It is fitting that this international statement of friendship and inspiration comes from the world’s greatest sporting icon and family.”

Greenwich Starting Blocks scheme supports young athletes with grants that they can use towards the cost of their training, sports kit and equipment, or travelling to competitions. The charity has supported more than 400 young people since it was formed in 2007.
