On the 29 February Royal Greenwich celebrated its 10th year of supporting Fairtrade with an event at the Town Hall enjoyed by over 200 local school children.

The highlights included a musical performance by pupils from Sherington primary school in Charlton who showed off their very impressive musical skills.

Running from 29 February to 13 March, Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 has its theme for the year which is, “Sit down for breakfast, stand up for farmers!”

Primary schools from across the borough joined in celebrating the start of Fairtrade Fortnight at Monday’s event. There were appearances from Norman Adams the Mayor of Greenwich, Deputy Leader of the Council John Fahy and Jonathan Smith from the Fairtrade Foundation.

Chocolatier Philippe Wall spoke about the history of the cocoa bean and also had on show his special chocolates with a gold coating carved into the shapes of violins and elephants.

Supermarket chains including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Marks and Spencer and Morrisons all got involved and shared some Fairtrade goods. Highlights of the day included a Smoothie “bicycle” mixing and crushing its fruit for school children to drink at the end.

Fairtrade supports farmers and workers in gaining more from trade and through this they are empowered to control their lives. It is an alternative approach that is based on partnership; one between those who grow our food and those who consume it.

Jonathan Smith, leading campaigner for the Fairtrade Foundation said: “Buying Fairtrade products ensures farmers and workers can earn a fair price, invest in their communities and businesses and are empowered to build a better future. Every Fairtrade breakfast shared across the Fortnight will help put food on the farmers’ tables.”

The Royal Borough’s Deputy Leader Councillor John Fahy said: “We have been supporting Fairtrade since 2006 and continue to build this relationship as we look to do the best we can to support the farmers who provide for us. I encourage local people to look out for businesses that sell Fairtrade products.”

Fairtrade fortnight continues with a range of events taking place in libraries across the borough.
