Metropolitan Police Charges Own Officer With 11 Counts Of Theft

An officer in active service with the Metropolitan Police has been charged with theft, a Met statement said.

Michael Harrington, 44, active Detective Sergeant with the Metropolitan Police Service, was charged, Wednesday, 6 April, with 11 counts of theft. He will appear on bail at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday, 19 May.

In a statement, the Met said the charges follow an investigation by the Directorate of Professional Standards Specialist Investigation unit.

He was arrested on 28 July 2015, and was suspended from duty that day, police statement said. At the time of the arrest, DS Harrington, a financial investigator was based within the Specialist Crime and Operations (SCO) Specialist and Economic Crime Command. 

The charges of theft relate to 11 victims, totaling in the region of £58,000. The offences are believed to have taken place on various dates between 12 October 2010 and 28 July 2015.

The investigation is ongoing and will attempt to identify any further victims, the Met statement said.
