The Royal Ballet’s New Production Of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein To Be Shown LIVE On The Big Screen In Woolwich

by Nancy Weirh | Woolwich

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein gets the Big Screen treatment this May. The gothic classic is turned into a full-length story ballet by Artist-in-Residence Liam Scarlett. Haunting and dramatic, the Royal Ballet’s production will be screened live on the Big Screen in General Gordon Square, Woolwich, on Wednesday 18 May from 7pm.

This period adaptation returns to the original themes of Shelley’s gothic novel. Steering away from the horror stereotypes associated with the title, Scarlett penetrates to the heart and soul of the drama and presents a tale ultimately about love.

Fuelled by grief at the death of his mother, Victor Frankenstein does the impossible and brings life to non-living matter. Terrified by what he has created, Victor abandons the Creature, dooming it to a life of loneliness – a decision that costs Victor his fiancée, Elizabeth, and ultimately his own life.

Councillor Denise Scott-McDonald (top right), Cabinet Member for Culture, Creative Industries & Community Wellbeing, said: “Residents of Greenwich can enjoy a spectacular performance of Mary Shelley’s Gothic Masterpiece- Frankenstein. This is a great opportunity for residents to enjoy performances held on the Big Screen in General Gordon Square this summer”.

This world premiere production includes a dramatic new score by Lowell Liebermann and grand gothic sets by Scarlett’s regular designer John Macfarlane.
