First African Mayor Inaugurated In Royal Greenwich

Councillor Olugbenga Babatola was officially installed as the first African Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich on Wednesday 25 May at a ceremony held in the Painted Hall, Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.

Councillor Peter Brooks will serve as the new Deputy Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

The Mayor’s chosen charities are AFRUCA (Africans Unite Against Child Abuse) and the Archway Project which is based in Thamesmead and was set up to enrich the lives of young people through a range of educational workshops.

Speaking at the Official Inauguration, Cllr Babatola said: “It is with great pleasure and pride that I accept the position of Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich for the forthcoming municipal year."

“There is always something exciting taking place in the Royal Borough and I can’t wait to get involved and meet residents as well as the many visitors that come to Royal Greenwich."

“My two chosen charities mean very much to me and I hope we manage to raise as much money as possible for the good work they do.”

About The Mayor:
Cllr Olugbenga Babatola was born in Ibadan, Nigeria. He attended primary school in Lagos, and went on to attend the Community Grammar School in Ibadan.   

He was enrolled into Oyo State College of Arts and Science, where he studied Mathematics, Economics and Government. He relocated to the United Kingdom in 1986 where he studied for a Diploma in Business Administration.

Following this, he completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies at the Greenwich School of Management and became an Associate member of the Association of Business Executives (AMABE). Alongside his academic studies, he worked in the retail industry and currently works as a Deputy Store Manager with a major retailer.

In 2014, Cllr Babatola was elected as a local Councillor representing Thamesmead Moorings Ward and in 2015 was elected Deputy Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

He is also a School Governor at a local primary school in Thamesmead and is Chair of the school’s Business Committee.

Cllr Babatola is a keen sportsman, having enjoyed athletics at school as well as playing football in his youth. He was particularly interested in long distance running, the high jump and javelin.
