| * Labour Back at City Hall As New Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan Takes Charge |
"My name is Sadiq Khan. I'm the Mayor of London!"
That was how the new Labour Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan introduced himself before his speech at City Hall Friday after he beat Tory's Zac Goldsmith to return a Labour candidate to City Hall after 8 years of Tory reign.
His short speech was punctuated with that boyish smile peculiar to him as he acknowledged the cheers that erupted following the hugely effective cliche.
He looked back at his support staff for reassurance and then, his face blanked again.
"I am determined to lead the most transparent, engaged and most accessible administration London has ever seen," Khan promised, saying no part of the capital will be left out during his tenure.
He said: "I will try to represent every single community and every single part of our city as Mayor for all Londoners."
He said he chose to do the signing ceremony at City Hall surrounded by Londoners of all backgrounds, being aware of the opportunities and help he has received from all and sundry.
He said: "I wanted to do the signing ceremony here in the very heart of our city surrounded by Londoners of all backgrounds. I am only here today because of the opportunities, and helping hands that our cities gave to me and my family."
The new Mayor promised to guide the city in a way all Londoners will get the opportunities available to him.
He said: "..my burning ambition for our city that will guide my mayoralty is to ensure that all Londoners get the opportunities that our city gave to me."
He promised to do all within his powers to make London better for all Londoners.
"And my promise to you is this" he said, "I promise you that I will always do everything in my power to make our city better for all Londoners. I will be a mayor for all Londoners. Thank you very much."

Sadiq Khan has covered some distance on his journey to City Hall and his victory will necessitate a bye-election in the coming months to fill the seat he has just vacated as the MP of Toothing which he represented for 11 years since 5th May 2005 to 7th May 2016.
Over the years, the new Mayor of London has held ministerial posts and shadow ministerial posts.
He was the Minister of State for Communities between 4 October 2008 – 8 June 2009 under former PM, Gordon Brown. Between 8th June 2009 and 11th May, 2010, he served as Minister of State for Transport.
Following Labour's loss of the general elections in 2010, Khan was named the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, serving under interim Labour Leader Harriet Herman between 14 May 2010 – 8 October 2010.
And when ED Miliband emerged as the new Labour Leader following the exit of Gordon Brown, Khan retained his frontline post and was named the Shadow Secretary of State for Justice between 8 October 2010 – 11 May 2015.
He was in ofrice as the Shadow Minister for London between 16 January 2013 – 11 May 2015 under Leader Ed Miliband.
His victory at Thursdays (5th May, 2016) elections is a huge reprieve for Labour Jeremy Corbyn who has promised Labour would have to do something to win back Scottish voters who piled behind the SNP again in a repeat of the May 7, 2015 general elections.
It's indeed a new dawn at City Hall and does show that Labour under Jeremy Corbyn is indeed electable.
