Royal Greenwich Helps Residents Lay The Foundation For A Career In Construction [With Updates]

by Nancy Weirh | Woolwich

Twenty Greenwich residents have laid the foundations for careers in construction after successfully completing the first stage of a Royal Borough training scheme.

Run by Greenwich Local Labour and Business (GLLaB) which is the council’s local labour initiative set up to help local people access training and jobs, the eight-week training scheme started at the beginning of the year. The programme is run in conjunction with six developers in the borough – Berkeley Homes, Lovell, Cardy, Ardmore, Durkan and Bouygues.

After pre-screening and initial assessments, the 20 successful candidates made it through the course which involved completing a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme to get a CSCS card and a level 1 multi trades qualification. They also had two weeks’ work experience on site and worked on a project to turn a container into a fully functioning classroom. In the final week of the programme GLLaB helped them improve their employability skills through mock interviews and CV writing.

Councillor Sizwe James (top right), the Royal Borough’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Economy and Smart Cities, said, “This is yet another example of the council’s efforts to provide training for residents. There is currently a great deal of development in the borough and we are proud to be able to work in partnership with a number of developers to create these kinds of opportunities for local people.”

Kevin O’Connor, head of social responsibility and inclusion at Durkan Limited, praised the programme, saying: “Well done GLLaB, and well done to all of the trainees who came through what is without doubt one the most professional and best-executed training-to-work programmes I have come across anywhere.”

After completing the course, the candidates had a number of interviews based on the trades they were interested in and were accepted to begin their apprenticeships at Bexley College and Greenwich Community College. Jason Beazley, 18, an apprentice at Cardy, said, “After College I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a career. Then I heard about GLLaB and with their help and support I secured a bricklaying apprenticeship in Charlton.

After the success of this programme GLLaB will be running another programme in July 2016 with Willmott Dixon and Kier joining the growing list of developers interested in this scheme.
