Sail Trainees On Board For The Tall Ships Festival

by Nancy Weirh | Woolwich

a remote controller during the Tall Ships Festival in 2014.
With less than a year to go before they embark on a voyage of a lifetime, the first of the Royal Borough’s new sail trainees got a taste of life aboard a Tall Ship at the launch of the Royal Greenwich Festivals 2016 (May 11).

Ten trainees were present at the launch event, which took place on-board the magnificent Tall Ship, The Morgenster. They were shown the ropes as the vessel made the trip from historic Woolwich Arsenal to Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, and got an insight into what to expect when they take to the seas as part of the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta.

The sail trainees include young people from across the Royal Borough who have been given the opportunity by the Council to participate as crew members on board some of the Tall Ships taking part in next year’s Sail Training International event.

The trainees will take part in an exhilarating race, sailing on some of the regatta’s magnificent Tall Ships on an unforgettable voyage on the first leg of the race, learning how to sail the ships all the way from Royal Greenwich to the port of Sines in Portugal.

The voyage to Portugal will take around two weeks, from 16 April to 1 May 2017. With help from the ships’ captains and the crews, the trainees will get the opportunity to steer at the helm, climb the rigging, take watches and chart the ship’s progress, learning team and leadership skills, time management and building their confidence.

On arrival in Portugal the trainees will then be able to enjoy the festivities in historic Sines, a port from Roman times and birthplace of the famous explorer Vasco de Gama. The trainees will take part in the crew parade and participate in sporting and cultural activities.

There is still plenty of time to sign up to become a sail trainee for the Festival in 2017. People of any ability, gender and with any level of sailing experience or disability are welcome to take part, and there are funded places for people who meet certain criteria.
