Serena William's prediction to Spaniard rival Garbine Muguruza came to pass on Saturday when the younger player, 22, beat her to win the French Open.

She had told her after beating her at the 2015 Wimbledon Final: "Don't worry, you will soon be winning the trophies when she beat her in their last pair up".

On Saturday, that statement proved prophetic and Muguruza 22, beat her 34 year old senior, winning the French Open final by 7-5, 6-4. It is Muguruza's first Grand Slam title.

Serena Williams was bidding to earn her 22nd major championship and equal Steffi Graf's Open-era record. She was the defending champion in Paris.

According to Fox News, "Williams saved four match points in the ninth game of the second set but could not prevent Muguruza from serving out the match in the next game."

The 22-year-old Muguruza was playing in her second Grand Slam final after losing to Serena in the 2015 Wimbledon final.
