The Royal Borough of Greenwich is launching a concerted campaign to tackle fly-tipping head-on in the borough. New powers bestowed on local authorities through the Unauthorised Deposit of Waste (Fixed Penalties) Regulations now make it easier for Royal Borough of Greenwich Enforcement Officers to issue on the spot fixed penalty notices of up to £400 for fly-tipping and go on to secure prosecutions.
These new powers are matched by an all-out offensive on the borough’s fly tippers with:
The Royal Borough of Greenwich is launching a concerted campaign to tackle fly-tipping head-on in the borough. New powers bestowed on local authorities through the Unauthorised Deposit of Waste (Fixed Penalties) Regulations now make it easier for Royal Borough of Greenwich Enforcement Officers to issue on the spot fixed penalty notices of up to £400 for fly-tipping and go on to secure prosecutions.
These new powers are matched by an all-out offensive on the borough’s fly tippers with:
* Two dedicated task forces being assigned to Plumstead and Charlton for rapid response and intelligence gathering functions.
* New signage across the borough making it explicit that fly-tipping is a serious offence and will be met with serious fines and prosecution.
* A drive to advertise the bulky waste collection service and the ‘Fix my Street App’ to residents through the Council’s digital and print media channels.
* Additional support for the Environment Champions Scheme and resident associations, especially in litter picks and clean-up efforts.
Cllr Jackie Smith (top), Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Environment, said: “We are re-doubling our efforts in tackling enviro-crime in the borough, especially fly-tipping which isn’t just irresponsible and inconsiderate; it’s illegal and will be treated as a serious offence. Residents can be assured that we have heard their concerns on fly-tipping loud and clear; we are listening and we are responding.”
The quickest and easiest way for residents to report fly-tipping is through ‘Fix My Street’ which can be accessed on-line and as an app:
