Royal Greenwich Showcases Abilities Of The Disabled As Garden of Eden Week 2016 Held

by our RBG Correspondent

To celebrate Learning Disability Week, the Royal Borough of Greenwich held a special event for adults with learning disabilities participating in the ‘Horticultural Project’ in Lodge Hill.

The event was held to showcase the work that people with learning disabilities have been doing in planting, growing and maintaining the garden space, while learning skills and enjoying the health and well-being benefits of working outside.

To complement the ‘friends and relationships’ theme this year for national Learning Disability Week, the event brought people with learning disabilities together to celebrate how far they had come and also socialise with old friends over a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

Helping lead the event, Cllr David Gardner, Cabinet Member for Adult and Social Care said: “This was a really worthwhile event to both celebrate and promote the Horticultural Project in Lodge Hill. These initiatives clearly bring huge enjoyment to our residents with learning disabilities and help foster ties and friendships which last a life time. I was delighted and humbled to join in this great event for Learning Disability Week.’

The Horticultural Project is part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich in-house Day Opportunities Service. The project is part of 11 small community based initiatives offering activities under different themes.
