Greenwich World Cultural Festival Returns To Eltham Palace For Eighth Year

by David Hopkins | GDA

A popular family festival returns to the historic grounds of Eltham Palace for its eighth year, for another laid-back afternoon of dance, music and art on Sunday 3 July, according to the Greenwich Dance.

In a statement, the GDA said the Greenwich World Cultural Festival, a free family arts spectacular produced and presented by Greenwich Dance, will take place on Sunday 3 July, 2016 between 12:30PM and 5:00PM.

The event will be held in the beautiful surroundings of the grounds of Eltham Palace and the free afternoon of entertainment will include dance, music, theatre, art, crafts and circus from around the world.

This year’s festival looks to the past and to the future, taking inspiration from this historic local landmark. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the grounds of Eltham Palace for free, and experience pop-up performances, live music, and creative activities for all the family. Plus, there will be a chance to dance through the decades in the Great Hall with Ballroom, Rock and Roll, and Lindy Hop.

There will be events for the whole family throughout the afternoon – including opportunities to join in and try folk dance, gamelan, arts and crafts, and face painting. For the first time this year, there will also be performances by dancers and musicians from the local Nepalese community, performing on the Southern Lawn stage.

Around the grounds there are a number of pop-up performances – including Running Wild, where a local cast present a new dance work set in the distant future, choreographed by Darren Ellis Dance; and Bouncing Cats and Boom Boom Pups – a children’s show where beatbox, rap and graffiti come together with the help of spoken-word artist Maxwell Golden and graffiti artist Mr Dane.

Paul Burns, Associate Director of Greenwich Dance, said: “It is always a pleasure to bring together such a wide range of arts and crafts at Greenwich World Cultural Festival."

He said: “The festival has always included performances from around the world, and so we’re really excited to be welcoming our friends from the Nepalese community to the festival for the first time, with dance and music performances.

“With everything from dance and music, through to arts and crafts from around the world, there really is something for the whole family. Plus, it’s completely free – and the only day of the year where you can explore the grounds of Eltham Palace for free!”
