It’s that time of the year again and the world’s largest men’s health movement is gearing up for another worldwide assault on upper lips. Movember encourages young men to grow out their moustaches throughout November to raise awareness and funds for men’s health, and NHS Greenwich Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is encouraging residents to get involved this year.
Preventative male deaths are still disproportionately caused by cardiovascular disease and diabetes, diseases which can often be mitigated by simple lifestyle changes. It's also important that men are aware of the effects of depression and check their testicles for changes as testicular cancer is very treatable if diagnosed early.
Dr Ellen Wright, Clinical Chair of NHS Greenwich CCG (top) said: “Movember is a fantastic initiative because it encourages men to be comfortable talking about their physical and mental wellbeing. It’s a light-hearted approach to a serious topic.”
“Whether it’s a result of mental health issues, or male specific illnesses such as testicular cancer, on average men are dying younger than they should. While such illnesses are often easily detected, managed and treated there are a variety of reasons why they are routinely ignored, resulting in worse health outcomes for the male population in the long-term.”
Social and cultural factors play a large role in preventative illness in men. Many men are reluctant to talk about mental health issues but once acknowledged there are lots of positive strategies that can help. It's just as important to take care of your mental as physical health.
Get involved this Movember by either growing your mo’, undertaking a physical challenge, host an event or simply by donating.
Participants can customise their own fundraising page with photos, motivations and targets.
