Ijaw Youths Mobilise After Estate Chairman Kills Popular Youth

Ijaw Youths in Victory Estate, Iba, Ojo, Lagos, are today mobilizing for what might be a profound disturbance in the area tonight following the death of one their friends last night.

The boys wielding cudgels, marched through different zones of Victory Estate, slamming down street gates and sending residents scampering for safety.

Reports said the Chairman of the Zone 4 area of Victory Estate in Iba, Ojo, Lagos, a retired navy officer named James, shot a popular youth named Stephen last night. The incident happened at about 4 am Saturday morning.

Stephen, an Ijaw teenager, is said to be popular and played street football with his friends in the area. He is said to have been very active as part of the vigilante group that mobilized after armed robbery broke out in parts of Lagos following President Buhari's broadcast, extending the lock-down.

This morning, Ijaw youths invaded the Chairman's home, along Summit Light Road, off Iyana School this morning, carried out his properties and set them ablaze. They fell short of razing the house.

Later, they returned to the venue, killing and carrying away livestock, including goats and sheep, which they shared.

Police are now on ground in the area which has been largely cordoned off to vehicular traffic.  Summit Light and Alape Streets are largely affected.

Despite the presence of the police, residents are afraid that the killing might represent a licence to breakdown of law and order at night and may result in general looting as the street gates have been destroyed this morning.
