TRAFFIC LIGHT, CONSTRUCTION SITES QUIET AS STORM BATTER SOUTH-EAST by Sonny Jones

* Storm Lash South East.

The Weatherman was right, the storm arrived late last night. Preceeded by rain, it went on to whip the environment.

When rain drops trickled down windows, it was clear what was happening, but the real storm was felt by early arrisers as they made their way to work.

At Woolwich town centre, early arrivals struggled to stay rooted to the ground as the wind blew with such intensity that threatened to lift them.

Construction sites were quiet and some buildings under construction were sensibly wrapped up in advance. This reduced the impact of the wind against such structures.

Despite that, electrical fittings at some sites around the town centre clanged and rattled as the storm hit. Coloured leaves fell and got quickly blown further on.

Powis Street had a sizeable litter of those leaves as workers arrived for work in the morning.

A motorbike, vespa, lay on its side at its parked space along Polytechnique Street, blown down by the strong wind. Fruits fell from a tree at Wellington Street, smashed and spattered on the floor.

A pine tree on the south side of The Woolwich Centre sagged, blocking a pathway, but overall, the town centre was not so badly battered.
